Compress photo to 50kb for MHT CET application form

How to Compress a Photo to 50 KB for an MHT CET Application Form

Uploading a photograph is a small but important part of an MHT CET application form. Many candidates face an upload error because their photo file is too large, too small, blurry or saved in the wrong format.

For many Maharashtra CET application forms, the photograph is commonly required in JPG or JPEG format and may need to be between 20 KB and 50 KB. However, requirements can differ by CET course and year, so always check the current information brochure for your exact application before uploading. The Maharashtra CET Cell’s brochures commonly specify a clear passport-style photo and a size limit around 50 KB for applicable courses. Check the official CET Cell website before final submission.

Before You Compress Your Photo

Start with a clear, recent passport-style photograph. Your face should be visible, centred and properly lit. Avoid heavy shadows, dark glasses, hats and blurred photos.

It is better to begin with a good-quality image and then reduce the file size carefully. If you compress an already blurry image too much, the face can become unclear and the application portal may reject it.

For most CET photo uploads, JPG or JPEG is usually the safest format. PNG files often become larger than necessary, so converting a PNG to JPG can help reduce the size.

How to Make a Photo Under 50 KB

Open the All-in-One Image Studio on PNG Cut and upload your photo.

First, crop the image properly. Remove extra background space, but do not crop out any part of your head, face or shoulders. Your face should remain clearly visible.

Next, choose JPG/JPEG as the output format. Then use the compression control to reduce the quality gradually. Do not immediately set the quality too low. Start around 70% to 80%, export the file and check its size.

If the file is still larger than 50 KB, reduce the image dimensions slightly and try again. For many application forms, a photo around 200 × 230 pixels is often suitable, but you must follow the dimensions mentioned in your own CET brochure.

Repeat the process until the file is below 50 KB while your face remains sharp and easy to recognise.

Final Check Before Uploading

Before uploading, check these points:

  • File format is JPG or JPEG

  • File size meets the exact limit in your application form

  • Your face is clear and visible

  • The photo is recent and passport-style

  • The correct photo is selected, not someone else’s photo

  • The uploaded preview on the application portal looks clear

Do not upload a photo just because it is under 50 KB. A very small file can look pixelated or unclear. The best result is a clear JPEG photo close to the allowed limit, such as 35 KB to 49 KB, if your form requires a maximum of 50 KB.

Common Problems

If your photo is 100 KB or more, convert it to JPG, crop unnecessary space and reduce dimensions slightly before lowering quality.

If your photo is only 5 KB to 10 KB, it may be too compressed and may look unclear. Use a better original image or export with slightly higher quality.

If the portal shows an upload error, recheck the format, file size and whether you uploaded the photo in the correct field. Photograph and signature fields are different, and uploading the wrong file can create problems later.

Always keep the original photo saved on your phone or computer. After uploading, check the preview carefully before submitting your MHT CET form.
